Beginnings

Welcome friends! I have started this entry in the global technosphere because I have been in love with books since the age of 2. Among the busy business of being a new teacher, this is my outlet for sharing thoughts on a love of reading a wide variety of books. My inspiration can be summed up with a yearbook quote from a teacher written when I was 8: "To the only girl at recess I see reading a book. Good for you!"
My blog title is quoted from a classmate who asked me this once. Believe it or not, I've also heard it as a teacher :D

Tuesday Memes

A weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week's topic is:

Top 10 Most Unfortunate Character Names

1)  Cushie & Pooh Percy- The World According to Garp- John Irving
And you thought Garp was an odd name...

2)  Morag Gunn- The Diviners- Margaret Laurence
3)  Hagar Shipley- The Stone Angel- Margaret Laurence

The first always makes me think of a dishtowel.  The second would bring an unfortunate nickname.

4)  Offred- The Handmaid's Tale- Margaret Atwood
The protagonist from a scary set of women's names with "of" __ (fill in male name).

5)  Piggy- The Lord of the Flies- William Goldman
Enough said.

6)  Mongo- Push- Sapphire (adapted into the movie Precious)
Precious's daughter with Down Syndrome.  This name is sad and shocked me to hear.

7)  Dill- To Kill a Mockingbird- Harper Lee
Mind you, this is a nickname but do you really want to be thought of as a pickle? :D

8)  Milkman, First Corinthians & Pilate Dead- Song of Solomon- Toni Morrison
Milkman is a nickname, the other two are randomly chosen Biblical names, and the last name is just eerie.

9)  Hamm, Clov & Nagg- Endgame- Samuel Beckett
Deliberately satirical, of course, in Theatre of the Absurd style.

10)  prot- K-PAX- Gene Brewer
Rhymes with "goat."  Purposely not capitalized.  Still strange.

"Down past the fisheye on the hall wall, I can see my white shape, of tented body, hair down my back like a mane, my eyes gleaming.  I like this.  I am doing something, on my own."

Top Ten & Teaser Tuesday

I'm making a short & sweet post because that movie page exhausted me today...but I can't pass up doing the Tuesday memes :D

A weekly meme hosted by Jennifer @ The Broke & the Bookish.

In honour of Hallowe'en on Sunday, this week's topic is:

Top Ten Scariest Books

1)  Carrie- Stephen King- shocking climax, even by today's horror movie standards

2)  The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde- Robert Louis Stevenson- timeless scary story

3)  Going Rogue- Sarah Palin- picturing her as the potential VP (and Prez in waiting) couldn't be scarier :D

4)  The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe- the literary master of suspense in poetry & short stories

5)  The Shining- Stephen King- the movie also makes for a scary companion!

6)  The Lovely Bones- Alice Sebold- lots of shudder-worthy scenes, especially when Susie's murderer is being questioned

7)  The Lord of the Flies- William Golding- how power breeds violence, even with young children

8) Heart of Darkness- Joseph Conrad- the darkest and most disturbing novel I've ever read

9)  Dracula- Bram Stoker- hard to avoid that one...

10)  Frankenstein- Mary Shelley- probably the best scary story & written by a woman, too!

A weekly meme hosted by Miz B @ Should Be Reading

I haven't participated in this one for a while, but I finally get the chance to mention my current read!

Her Fearful Symmetry- Audrey Niffenegger
"A random memory came to her:  We stood here together, my hand on the doorknob just like this.  A younger hand; we were young."

Love the paperback cover!
Different from the hardcover version.
Better, I think.
Last night, I started Under the Dome by Stephen King and got up to page 44.  It's definitely hard to put down, but I was getting a headache and was forced to stop, otherwise I would've pulled an all-nighter!  I've heard all good things about this book and different amounts of time spent getting to the finish line--one blogger is on Week 20-something; a fellow book shopper yesterday told me she finished it in 5 days?!?

"All behind him.  And ahead of him?  Why, the gates of America.  Goodbye smalltown Maine, hello Big Sky" (page 11).

I know this isn't random, but I need to share this:  I read the first 50 pages of Never Have Your Dog Stuffed by Alan Alda last night & the first line is really striking:

"My mother didn't try to stab my father until I was six, but she must have shown signs of oddness before that."

If that doesn't grab your attention, I don't know what will!

Teaser Tuesday

I'm liking these memes...they're fun and they get me motivated to post even the smallest thought I have about reading.

How to Post:
Grab your current read.  Let the book fall open to a random page.  Share with us two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12.  You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your “teaser” from … that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!  Please avoid spoilers.

My Life- Bill Clinton

"Twice he woke to tell Mother and me he was still there."  (Page 112)

"Often when I was a boy, Daddy would stare out the window into a storm and say, 'Don't bury me in the rain.'"  (Page 113)
