Beginnings

Welcome friends! I have started this entry in the global technosphere because I have been in love with books since the age of 2. Among the busy business of being a new teacher, this is my outlet for sharing thoughts on a love of reading a wide variety of books. My inspiration can be summed up with a yearbook quote from a teacher written when I was 8: "To the only girl at recess I see reading a book. Good for you!"
My blog title is quoted from a classmate who asked me this once. Believe it or not, I've also heard it as a teacher :D

Literary Blog Hop

A biweekly meme hosted @ The Blue Bookcase.

This week's topic is from Gilion @ Rose City Reader:

Can literature be funny?  What is your favorite humorous literary book?

Well, certainly literature can be funny!  After all, if we didn't have comic relief in books, there would be an awful lot of dull stories :D

My favourite book that is humourous and literary is Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding.  It cleverly modernizes Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice (complete with a contemporized Mr. Darcy) and isn't your typical "chick lit" romance novel with sharp writing in unique semi-epistolary (diary) style.  It provides a nice balance of bawdy and charming humour...isn't that what we all love about the British? :D

Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon and The World According to Garp by John Irving also count as some of my favourite "funny" pieces of literature.

What is your favourite funny book? :)

  1. Bridget Jones was hilarious, I agree!

David Sedaris always makes me guffaw, and I think that some of his essays offer enough depth and wordplay to be considered literature, don't you? Also, David Foster Wallace did the same, from time to time.

  2. Bridget Jones was a fun one. I like that literature can have both bawdy humor and charming humor and still be literary. :)

  3. I agree that even the most serious books often need a moment of comic relief.

  4. Great choice. I thought Bridget Jones was hilarious, particularly her fear of being eaten by an Alsatian. I had no idea what an Alsatian was, but it literally made me laugh out loud. :)

  5. Bridget Jones is cute. I think that some "chick lit" books are very witty.

  8. I don't go to a lot of movies so it's unusual for me to say that I didn't read the book but I saw the movie, but somehow that happened with this one. The movie was so-so. I should read the book. It sounds better.

  9. No, Literature is never, ever Funny. It is Serious. I, sadly, will consequently never comprehend it.

  10. You're right: Bridget Jones is funny. And while some might quibble with the literary qualifier for Helen Fielding, its progenitor certainly qualifies! I found you through the hop and am now a new follower.
